Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a pain caused by a severe condition or an injury and it indicates damage to nerves. When a person experiences a pain, the signal is often picked up by specialized nerve endings after detecting that something is wrong in the body.  The signals are then sent to the brain as well as the spinal cord. However, when an individual experiences neuropathic pain, faulty signals are sent to the brain due to the fact that the nerves are damaged or injured. Thus, the false signals can inform the brain that the body is undergoing pain when in actual fact there is no pain. Among the common causes of neuropathic pain are multiple sclerosis, diabetes, AIDS or HIV infection, chemotherapy, alcoholism, shingles, sciatica, spine surgery, facial nerve issues,  plus leg, back, and hip problems.

How CBD Could Potentially Relieve Neuropathic Pain

A number of studies have revealed that CBD is effective in ameliorating neuropathic pain. For example, research by Toth et al. confirmed that CBD decreases proteins which usually trigger nerve damage in mice suffering from diabetes. The same study discovered that vaporized CBD inhibited the growth of microglia cells.  These cells are responsible for diabetic neuropathy.  In addition, the researchers confirmed that CBD reduced the levels of pain which some mice were subjected to.

Hoggart et al. carried out another investigation to find out the possible use of CBD in ameliorating pain. The investigation involved 234 people who were battling peripheral neuropathic pain.  Virtually all participants reported reduced levels of pain after taking cannabidiol for 38 weeks.  More than half of the subjects claimed to have their pain reduced by 30%. Although caution must be exercised as far as generalizing the outcomes of these studies is concerned, the findings suggest the probability of using cannabidiol as a therapeutic measure for ameliorating neuropathic pain.

Benefits of CBD for Neuropathic Pain

Besides the pain which sufferers experience, the generally accepted therapeutic supports for this condition have serious side effects. At present, therapeutic drugs for ameliorating neuropathic pain include opioid painkillers, anti-depressants, and anti-inflammatory drugs.  Sadly, these medications do not produce the desired results in the therapeutic supports of this condition in the majority of patients. In addition, they make patients vulnerable to physical dependence, addiction, and serious side effects. However, CBD causes none of these problems listed above. This makes it a perfect choice for sufferers of neuropathic pain.
